A SIDEWAYS STEP WITH NEW GIMMICK
Well, who would have thought….a 3-D dance movie! Then again, it seems that every Hollywood picture is jumping on the re-booted gimmick of the “3-D Experience”.
But the big question is: does 3-D work with this style of movie?
Before we answer this “extremely” important question, we should see if this film,
Step Up 3, has a plot to get excited about first.
Luke (Rick Malambri) runs a sort of “hostel for homeless awesome street dancers” in NYC while also walking around with a video camera recruiting new talent for his dance crew. He quickly notices University freshmen Moose ( Adam G. Sevani) and seductive Natalie (Sharni Vinson) in a bid to get the best crew together to battle their nemesis Julien and his dance crew “The Samuri” at the World-Jam Damce Championship. It’s a “high-stakes showdown that will change their lives forever”….blah blah blah.
Let’s face it, you don’t walk into one of the “Step-Up” movies (or any dance movie for that matter), for the amazing storyline. What you do come for though, is the dancing…and Step Up 3 doesn’t disappoint.
Some of the most amazing dance sequences I’ve ever seen, litter this film. I’m not a big follower of the dance scene, but for all the tacky dialogue and wooden acting in this film, the dance sequences were what really stopped me from walking out of the cinema.
As for that big question of the “3-D gimmick” working in this genre, it is surprisingly effective with obvious scene created purely for the 3-D experience (and these are the tackiest of the whole film). But, at the end of the day, Step 3 is just an ordinary movie with extraordinary dancing.
